Puddle Jumping

There is a flash of an instant where I see my son see the puddle.

In that same instant, my mind says, grab him! Stop him!

The mind works fast...

It's already envisioned the bath, the laundry, and the socks that will probably never be white again.

But the kid inside of me says, "Yeehaw!" and I grab my camera instead.

Jump! Splash!

Over and over.

It never gets old, not even when you're old like me.

My heart jumps each time he does, because I remember what it feels like to be four and muddy and free.

In a flash of an instant I realize...

After the bath, the laundry, and the socks that will probably never be white again...

The mud from this puddle has stained my son's heart forever; a stain that will never wash clean.
